I woke up pretty poorly this morning. Not only did I wake up late, but apparently I woke up still carrying some negative emotions from last night with me. With all that, it totally slipped my mind that today is the first day of Autumn, that it’s the equinox, that today is Mabon. I’ve been looking forward to today for a while now, even though I’m still unfamiliar with it. I wanted to make it a joyous and happy day, a special day, even if I can’t do so in the way I most desire to right now. I’ve gotten off to a pretty poor start for that, and I apologize profusely.

The realization of just how badly I’ve messed up right off the bat today, had me feeling pretty low, pretty ashamed, and yes, sad. I needed some guidance, and I was getting ready to walk out the door, my eyes alighted on the tarot and runes sitting there from two weeks ago. I hadn’t picked them up since, last time being a powerful gift that kept me going for quite a while. So this morning, I took a couple more moments to ask what I should be keeping in mind right now, and got a bit of a surprise.

Two cards leaped off the top of the deck after shuffling, face up and side by side. I drew two runes as well. I ended up with the “2 of Chalices” linked with the rune “Fehu”, and “The Lovers” linked with the rune “Jera”. I’ll leave my personal interpretations of this set to myself, it’s a bit private, but I did notice a few things with this draw that caught my attention. While reading the rune interpretations for “Fehu”, a part I usually ignore – the deity associated with the rune – leaped off the page at me. Fehu, associated with Freyja. A mental shrug, and then on to the next. Jera, the year, the harvest. A rune tied to harvest coming up on Mabon? Interesting! On a whim I looked at the deity associated with this rune too. Freyja. Two runes tied to Freyja, one dealing with harvest, on a day associated with harvest.

I’m not familiar with Freyja. I’m not familiar, if it comes right down to it, with MOST of the god/dess forms deity chooses to reveal itself as. I did a little research however (as much as was possible to get a general idea, being limited by my cellphone internet), and came up with this. Freyja is a goddess of love, beauty, abundance and fertility. She also is a goddess of battle and death. She has connections to magic and divination. And on a further whim, searches on deities related to Mabon revealed, of course, Freyja. This all seems to fit in with both the cards and runes drawn, and with today in particular.

Therefore, I’m taking today to do a little more research, and honor Freyja for bestowing me with this gift, and to take some time to reflect on the message I’ve been given. Hopefully today I can bake some bread, and maybe it’s not too late to salvage today, to mark it and make it something special, and share it with the one I love, in whatever way I can. Happy Mabon to you all.

So I have to admit, I love playing around with divination. I like using the Tarot to sneak a peak into my own subconscious, or to communicate with the divine. I don’t really buy into the whole “cards have power on their own” idea, but I DO see them as a tool, a key to helping us understand ourselves and our motivations a bit more. And that’s a good thing. I have a few decks right now, but far and away my favorite of these is my Fey Tarot. The artwork is beautiful, and they’re great cards for reading intuitively, which is how I prefer to read. But using the cards by themselves, it always felt like something was missing. I could read them, I could even get a fairly clear picture, but there was still that small creeping certainty that it wasn’t quite right. I never used my runes much. I have a couple books that explain them somewhat, but they lack that intuitive nature for me, and their meanings seem pretty … well … set in stone. Heh. At the same time, they still draw me to them.

One day, I was doing a weekly draw, asking “what do I need to keep in mind this week?” The card I got didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me on its own, and while contemplating drawing a clarifier, my eyes fell on the bag of runes. The idea hit like a ton of bricks, and so I went to draw one rune for my clarifier. Within moments of opening the bag, one rune just about jumped out, literally spilling from the bag with barely a touch by me. After looking up its meaning, and tying it to the card, I realized I was on to something. It brought the card into sharp focus for what was going on in my life, in a way the card itself could not alone.

Since then, I’ve done all my weekly draws with one card and one rune, and it’s AMAZING the way they link together. Recently while doing a weekly draw, 3 cards and 3 runes all leaped out, despite my only wanting one. When things like this happen, I roll with it, because I figure it’s important, that I’m being TOLD something, if that makes sense.

In the desire to share this, and the hopes that maybe somebody else can find a use for working this way, the following is my drawing and impressions from two weeks ago.

The first card drawn was the 5 of chalices. A clay or stone goblet painted blue stands upright before a stylized, white fairytale castle, that is nothing but background, … the goblet has half of the cup area broken away, and the shards lie on the ground. Inside this broken goblet sits a tiny red and orange fairy, most probably male, who has a hand held thoughtfully to his chin, though he could also be hiding a smile, he looks like he has a small smile. another point of interest are there are two black rectangle markings above his eyes, which are just a uniform white.

With this card came the blank rune, often used to signify having no choice, to things being out of your hands and in the hands of fate or the gods.

From the 5 of chalices I get something small and alive inside something broken, a hope, a rebirth from the pieces of some tragedy, a thoughtful and hopeful, curious sense of adventure for what lies ahead, a time to transition to action, to explore. I don’t know what the traditional meanings are, and I can never remember what each suit signifies off the top of my head. Hence my love for intuitive reading.

This card speaks of loss, but progress as well. With the blank, as it’s tied to the card, that these things are in the hands of the gods, that it’s not something that can be controlled, ….. I wasn’t sure how to tie it in with what I got out of the card yet though, and thought that it may be possible that in this case the runes aren’t tied to specific cards at all but to each other, which would be interesting.

The next card is Judgement. This is a busy busy card. An artist, male/female, can’t tell…. lies hunched over a desk, face down behind a folded arm (the traditional sleeping at a desk pose), the other arms stretched motionlessly out in front, holding a paint brush, which has drawn a light blue swirl/sideways S shape on a piece of paper. A small black imp is coming out of the inkpot nearby, a white female shape in a white dress is coming out of the paper, on a green tube of paint sits a little green fairy in a curly hat, on the blue paint brush is a blue fairy pointing at the black imp, on the artists’ red coat is a red fairy watching everything over their shoulder, a little green pixie is flying around in the background, and on top of the artists sits in midair a translucent white cherub fairy blowing the golden horn….

And with this card was Perth, the rune of chances, mysteries, unknowns, making the best of things, “There is an element of choice in everything. No one can upset you, you can only choose to be upset. No one can exert power over you unless you choose to subject yourself to it. Claim your right to choose, and don’t allow others to compromise your truth or prevent you from doing what you need to do. The only danger here is not to make a choice at all, but to leave things to fate when you will have no say in your own future.” I think there was a LOT of that message in the card as well. I also got this rune in a converse position, meaning take nothing for granted and only trust your loved ones.

The card represents a judgement with the cherub blowing the horn of course…. but the things sneaking up around him are creatures of his own creation. The media he works or lives his life on looks up at him adoringly, the brush points accusingly, the ink looks sneaky and suspicious, the paint is well fed and sedentary, the clothing is curious but inactive, and the background is in motion and unclear, but it all seems tied to the artist. Is the artist sleeping? Are they hiding? crying? It feels like it’s saying, the only person who can truly judge you is you. If I tie this rune to this card, they’re saying: “Who knows what judgement may come, it’s your choice, it’s what you choose to make of it. Stick with what you believe, take your chances, and make the best of it.

Last card is the 7 of swords. It depicts a female warrior fairy, who is hiding behind a wall, holding a large sword, hilt in one hand, the other hand cradling the blade, almost carressing it. Her wings, legs and forearms are tiger striped with a deep blood red, ending in solid red on her hands. She has red eyes, and red stripes also at her temples. Her hair is cut short. She is glancing behind her, around the wall, as if watching for quarry. Her only garments are a strip cloth tied about her breasts, and a loincloth, both are the same coarse material, and a dull, reddish earthish grey. She herself is transparent, blending into the wall behind her. She’s laying in wait, prepared for action, ready to spring, biding her time, like the hunter waiting for a perfect moment, but prepared to take action with ferocious tenacity when the moment approaches. She exudes confidence, she is the warrior, the huntress. There’s no malice here, only a terrible sense of purpose.

With this card is tied Sowilo, the sigil, the sun, the strength and courage to take action for that which is good. Having the power to bring good things to fruition. Good fortune and a positive feel. To face fears and overcome. A force for attack, and a symbol for victory.

I can also see the runes linking to each other specifically, seperate from the cards…. there is the power of the gods, the will of the gods, and after that, there is what you choose to make of it, and you can make the best of it.

If I link the cards together I come up with: “From within tragedy and brokenness, lie seeds of new possibilities, of adventure and unknown… we choose to make of these what we will from our own fears and demons, our own dreams and ideals and hopes… but ultimately, it’s what we make of it… ending with a reminder that with that, comes a time for action, to be prepared to strike when the moment comes, to not be a slave to fear and doubt, to not hide our faces from what is before us, or sit musing in the wreckage, but use our strength and be prepared to take action for what we have our sights on..

And if I link the triple runes to the triple cards……….

What lay behind and what lays before…. only the gods know for sure, but we have the choice to make the worst of it, or the most of it, but ultimately, it is our choice what we do, and if we’re to take action, we will do so with positivity and resolve.

I know this was a long way to go for a summary, but it helped me out a lot to have that clear of a picture painted when asking “What do I need to keep in mind this week.” I hope you enjoyed this, and if this can help somebody else, then I think it was worth it. Bless.
